Every criminal charge starts the same way for the person facing it: uncertainty about what happens next, and pressure to make a decision before you understand the stakes. Mike Kielty's approach doesn't change based on the charge — investigate everything, challenge what the State can't prove, and prepare every case as if it's going to trial, because prosecutors negotiate differently with a lawyer who actually will.

State, Federal, Municipal, and Juvenile Court

Missouri criminal charges move through different court systems depending on severity and jurisdiction — municipal court for city ordinance violations, state circuit court for most felonies and misdemeanors, federal district court for federal offenses, and juvenile court for minors. Each has its own procedure, its own prosecutors, and its own pressure points. Mike appears regularly in all four.

What Happens After an Arrest

  • Don't talk. Anything said to police before you have a lawyer gets used against you — silence is a right, not an admission of guilt.
  • Bond and bail. Getting released while a case is pending is often the first fight, and it affects everything that follows.
  • The investigation. Mike reviews the State's evidence early — search authority, witness statements, and lab or forensic work all get scrutinized.
  • The decision point. Every case eventually comes down to negotiate or try it. Mike prepares every case for trial so that decision is made from strength, not fear.
